Boulder, CO — Today, Representative Junie Joseph issued the following statement in response to President Trump’s planned military parade:

“Ours is a nation born in defiance of kings.

From the beginning, we declared that no one man would rule over us. We broke the chains of monarchy to form a government of, by, and for the people — a government where no one stands above the law — not then, not now.

But our story is also a story of long struggle. For 246 years, millions lived in slavery — denied freedom on the very soil where freedom was promised. When slavery finally fell, 89 more years of Jim Crow sought to keep that promise locked away. And still, the people endured. Still, we rose.

We are a people who have stood against corruption. When Watergate shook the highest office, the people stood firm — not for party, but for principle. A president resigned, but the Republic stood strong. Because here, the law is king.

And when terror struck on 9/11, Americans rushed into danger to save one another. We did not ask who you voted for, where you prayed, or where you were born — we reached for one another as neighbors, as Americans.

And when the world was gripped by a once-in-a-century pandemic, it was not tanks or parades that saved lives, but ordinary Americans — doctors, nurses, first responders, essential workers — who risked everything to care for one another and keep this nation moving forward.

Today, we face another test.

A man who dreams of power not as a servant of the people, but as their ruler. Who plans to roll tanks through our streets tomorrow, not to defend freedom, but to glorify himself. Who offers spectacle while millions lose healthcare, while the most vulnerable are left behind.

To that man I say: We will not be distracted. We will not trade bread for a parade. We will not eat cake while the people suffer.

We have faced greater threats than this. We have overcome injustice, terror, and betrayal. We will overcome this.

Because America does not belong to kings. It belongs to the people.

On behalf of my constituents, and all who believe in the promise of American democracy— No King’s Day. Not now. Not ever.”
